In this photograph produced by Maggie Taylor, the elements in this composition are taken by different cameras, some are taken by film camera, and the others are taken on her digital point and shoot camera, and then she combines these foreground/background elements in photoshop. She is able to move things around to her likings, and change some of the objects in the picture on the go as a form of experimenting. She also likes to put on curtains in some of her works to create a stage-like dramatic effect.
In this picture produced by Jerry Uelsmann, he did not use photoshop or any digital devices to compose at all. He put black filled paper directly in front of his lens as a mask, and then he took two identical pictures of the tree, flip one of the negative around horizontally, and then put another negative of a girl on top, of which he took with a clean background and slightly underexposed in order to compensate the multiple exposure. Combining them all together and he was able to develop this image in a physical dark room.
