Sally Manns “Immediate Family” series shows her children in vulnerable positions ranging from the ages one to twelve years old. My immediate reaction is disturbed. Mann states that they are not her children when used as models but simply her artistic vision. She was drawn to the darker side of childhood from wet beds, insect bites, to aspirations of adulthood. However, she is their mother and they are not old enough to consent to such public publications of their young lives that can put them in danger. Although these times in childhood are by no means wrong it’s the feeling that Mann has profited off of it as an adult that seems wrong.
