In 2003 Sally Mann released What Remains, a five-part piece looking into mortality. The series includes pictures of dead bodies from the Forensic Study Facility, known as the body farm. The images are graphic and detailed, which by many people can be seen as unnecessarily gruesome and incredibly disrespectful to the dead in the photographs. On the other side of the argument is that although it is graphic, it showcases a taboo and uncomfortable aspect in the Western world, the natural and inevitable cycle of death that everyone must face. It makes the viewer uncomfortable, which is often the goal of powerful and thought provoking art.
