Tomoko Uemura in Her Bath

This image evokes feelings of guilt for me. I know I have no control of=ver the situation, but I can’t help but feel guilty for the mental and physical pain and suffering the mother and daughter have been through. Smith documents the deformities that many Japanese peoples suffered from because of mercury poisoning, also called Minamata disease. The photo is striking. The black and white image has highlights that show just enough of what is wrong, and a lot of shadows to cover up everything else. We cant help but feel bad for both mother and daughter, and this image shows just one family out of so many that were forced to live with Minamata disease. The images became very popular, and forced the Japanese govt. to pay compensation to the families who were hurt by the chemical poisoning.
