Jerry Uelsmann

Apocalypse II, 1967
Untitled, 1982

In the documentary, there is a comment that Jerry anticipated Photoshop before Photoshop existed. His photos are magnificent. It is no longer a discussion of technique when looking at the images, because the technique only supports the image. The documentary also makes a connection between Ansel Adams’ landscape photography and compares it to Jerry Uelsmann’s photography. The technique of Adams’ work is present in Uelsmann’s too, but there is a new dimension of creativity on top of that which really makes the work exceptional. Jerry used a technique where he would have a ring around the lens which split the area in half. He could take two photos Top and Bottom halves and then combine the film to make one photo, which is what is present in the house with roots photo.
