Eugene Smith’s work, specifically his photo of Tomoko is riveting. It is tough to view, but essential in understanding the dangers and consequences of environmental degradation and government neglect. When the people of Minamata were being silenced and not given the attention they deserved, Smith’s photos helped amplify the voices of their struggles. Using his artwork Smith was able to advocate for change and spread awareness on a global stage. This is definitely something that I hope to do with my photography/art.
