This curation of Fischer’s photographs highlights the destruction and dilapidation  of the Seaside Heights Boardwalk in Ocean County, NJ. In past years, the boardwalk was a place of electric attractions and great tourism. In 2012, Superstorm Sandy hit the Jersey Shore and tore apart the boardwalk by its very foundation, and the iconic Casino Pier  rollercoaster, Star Jet, was blown into the Atlanic. While rebuilding the boardwalk in 2013, a fire broke out and scorched much of the south end of the Seaside Heights boardwalk. These disasters have had lasting financial impact on the boardwalk and surrounding areas, and the Covid-19 pandemic has furthered the decline of prosperity in Ocean County, New Jersey.

Erica Fischer is a Graphic Designer and a Photographer from Ocean County, NJ. Through her photography, she revisits and portrays the decay of distinct places she remembers from her childhood. In addition to photography, Fischer’s other interests include traveling, cinematography, and the fine arts.

  1. I’m having trouble accesing your book!! I would love to see it though! I have a house at the jersey shore a short drive from the boardwalk and would love to see what you put together!

  2. I loved looking at the photos you captured of Seaside. I grew up spending summers in this area and I haven’t visited since the pandemic began. However, it was something that I’ve wondered about while this was happening. It was interesting to see the lack of people in the area and how Seaside hasn’t changed that much other than a decline in the infrastructure. I have noticed the are being less taken care of since Sandy and I think that you captured this perfectly in your collection.

  3. I loved your emphasis on details. There are so many pictures out there that just show the beach but the way you captured your photos makes me see it in a whole new way. The picture of the mask in the sand was a really cool addition. I love these detail shots that show not only the off-season but also what it looks in the time of COVID.
