Alfred Stieglitz – Film Photography

From ‘Room 3003’ – The Shelton, New York, Looking Northeast, 1927

What caught my eye about this photo is the geometry. There is a grid, but angled on a diagonal, and the buildings and structures remind me of cubism. The long depth of field is very impressive to me, as these kinds of shots are always tricky for me. I think this image is important for new digital artists because of the values that are present in the image. There is still so much detail even though the black point is so dark but well exposed, and the highlights aren’t overwhelmingly bright. This photo was taken on film, and it was much more difficult to get ideal results because there wasn’t the kind of quick editing that digital artists can do now. I can learn from this photograph to perfect the different settings on my DSLR to get good results in exposure and depth of field without editing it later.
