Salem, Oregon, 1976
While looking through the “Ward 81” collection of photographs, the majority of them were rather sad and filled with emotion. This photograph caught my attention because it is a rather happy photograph in comparison to the others in the collection. The people in the photo appear as if they are dancing and having a break from other things that go on during a stay in a mental ward. In times of struggle, dancing and smiling can sometimes be the best medicine and that is what I am seeing through this photograph. The people seem to be enjoying themselves.
