Civil Rights Photography

Charles Moore, Birmingham 1963

Moore shot this photo during the Civil Rights era. He captures the painful water hose that is being sprayed on civilians by firemen. The hose is a high pressure hose for extinguishing fires, and the water pressure is damaging and extremely painful when sprayed on humans. In this photo we can see there is a huge line of people on the ground in pain being sprayed. This was a form of suppression and violence to limit protests. The photo is effective because we can see everything in action from the protestors on the ground covering their heads in fear and pain, and the firemen in the act of inflicting punishment.
