Serrano’s Piss Christ

Andreas Serrano “Piss Christ” 1987

Andreas Serrano and his work, “Piss Christ” is argued to be one of the most influential pieces in the past 30 years. Serrano’s photograph of the crucifix in a vat of his urine has sparked controversy for over two decades. Many Christians find the piece to be deeply offensive, and fail to see the irony in their claims and the reality of Christ’s crucifixion. I found it deeply interesting that Serrano’s work wasn’t meant to solely to deliver a high shock value, it was also forcing people to really think about what the crucifixion of a man entailed.
