Civil Rights, Sosi

Sosi Korian Blog Post #15

I chose this photograph because I think it captured a very special moment during the Civil rights movement. In this photograph taken by Charles Moore, one can see two African American women along with a Caucasian women in-between them. The women are linking arms and walking in what seems to be a march to end discrimination against African Americans. I thought this photograph was particularly powerful because of the facial expressions on these women. One can see clearly the determination and passion these women feel for what they are standing up for. They are even holding hands which is symbolic because it represents how they are joined together as one. Furthermore, I think Charles Moore created a very interesting frame for the photo. He allows for the women’s facial expression and emotion to be the main focus of the photo, an aspect that viewers will be drawn to as soon as they look at the photo. Moore shows his audience the important of equality and the Civil rights movement as a whole through his representation of the strength and togetherness that these women clearly posses, two concepts that fueled many people during this time.
