Firemen hose demonstrators with high-pressure jets of water. Birmingham, Ala., 1963x, Charles Moore.

This image is initially shocking and attracted a lot of attention throughout the years. The Birmingham Fire Department is seen here acting completely out of jurisdiction and physically abusing these peaceful protestors.

Breaking down what makes this photograph effective:

  1. Dynamic framing adds to intensity and action
  2. The fireman and water from the hose guide the viewers eyes towards the victims in the image
  3. The motion blur caused by the spray of water demonstrates the power of the hose
  4. Another demonstration of power of the hose is the fact that there are three firemen holding onto one hose
  5. The streets are soaked, suggesting that the firemen have been firing the hose for a while now
  6. Lastly, the content is very powerful
