Competition, 2004

Qingsong, Wang. Competition. 2004. When Worlds Collide, New York. The Paris Review. 7 Oct. 2020. https://www.theparisreview.org/blog/2011/02/04/competition/

Qingsong’s tableaux, titled Competition, is a massive array of self drawn mock advertisements stacked onto of one another, drawn to look like corporate logos. Qingsong did this as a callback to China’s cultural revolution, when rival factions of the Red Guard plastered handmade propaganda posters throughout China. Because Qingsong used corporate logos in contrast to political ideologies, he is comparing the massive influx of information in advertisements that companies dump on us today to propaganda, and in doing so linking the technological revolution of today to the cultural revolution that China had.
