When shooting for motion blur in photography, one wants to keep the shutter open longer, allowing more time to pass and objects to become a blur. However, the issue with keeping the shutter open longer is more light gets in, and the shot can become overexposed. To avoid this, certain measures can be taken to let less light into the camera while the shutter speed is longer. The first method is to adjust one’s settings to have a smaller aperture value, so that the hole that lets light into the camera is the smallest and lets the least light in. A second way to decrease the amount of light is to decrease the ISO setting of the camera. This makes the camera’s sensor less sensitive to light and allows the user to choose longer shutter speeds. The third way to decrease light coming in is by using a neutral density or polarizing filter, which act as sunglasses to the camera’s lens and ensures that the image won’t be over exposed.
