LUAG – Taking It to the Streets Photograph

Man in Suit, Woman in Fur Coat, 1954

In the featured black and white image, a man stands on the left side in a suit and hat, his hands jammed in his pockets while he looks to the left, distracted. A woman stand next to him, taking up the right side of the image with a large light-colored fur coat, her face peaking out as she too looks off to the left side of the image. The composition of the image is really interesting, as the two standing figures are shot from a very low vantage point, looking up at the looming figures. Their bodies take up nearly the whole image, and so the intricacies of their clothing are very much in detail. The background, although only a small part of the image, is also interesting, with a dirty looking brick pattern meeting a column filled with complex designs running up and down its length. This piece really popped out to me in the gallery because of the cool low angle approach that to photographer took, as well as the luxurious looking fur coat that takes up a large part of the image. It is such a close shot that when I first saw the photo I thought the man was holding up the fur coat, maybe hawking it on the street.
