Doing Democracy

This photograph taken by Leonard Freed captures people in the March on Washington DC in 1963.  Rather than capturing the march as a whole this piece shows individuals marching, making the shot a more personal experience. It shows young men among the immense crowd, both looking at the camera, but not interacting any further with the photographer. It captures just a passing glance, as the subjects have much more important things at hand than taking a photo. I chose this piece because almost 60 years later, this exact photo could be taken in the streets around the country and that speaks volumes about our democracy.
