Wang Qingsong is a contemporary Chinese artist whose large-format photographs address the rapidly changing society of China. This full–scale tableaux shot titled Competition is from the exhibition “When Worlds Collide” which was on view at the International Center of Photography, New York in 2011. For this installation, Wang Qingsong draws from his memories of the Cultural Revolution, a time when the walls of China’s cities were covered with handmade posters plastered up by rival Red Guard factions. The walls of a Beijing movie theater were covered with more than 600 mock advertising posters, in which he drew by hand.
