When asked about his process, photographer Jeff Wall says “I begin by not photographing”. Wall expresses how he cherishes and remembers photo-worthy scenes, but doesn’t take them in the moment. Instead he will make note of everything he saw that day and try to recreate the scene himself. For example, he mentions how he saw a group of young people with tattoos sitting under a tree. He thought that was a beautiful moment of human interaction and made note of how the light shimmered onto their skin through the tree leaves. Almost a year later, he found a similar tree and recreated that scene with two women and himself to photograph.
