Doing Democracy - Lehigh University Art Galleries, Erica

George Stephanopoulos Collection – Erica F

Danny Lyon, American, b. 1942. Meal Line. 1968-1969 (Printed later). Artstor, library.artstor.org/asset/28280548

This photo is stunning. Lyon took this photo with long depth of field and wide angle so the viewer could see as much as possible of the long line. These men do not look happy, they just appear to be doing something that they do everyday in 1942 during WWII. These men are indistinguishable from one another. It doesn’t appear that these men are military, but perhaps that is why they are all in uniform. They are all in uniform in a line all doing the same thing, waiting for food. Many of the men seem to have their heads down and sulking which is a major theme of the composition. Waiting in this long line that I’m sure extends beyond what the photo captured must be daunting, especially if it is an everyday occurrence. This overall feeling of never ending dread is what the war must have felt like, which I think this is what the photo is capturing.
