This image titled March on Washington was taken by Leonard Freed in Washington DC, 1963. The March on Washington was a massive protest that occurred in August 1963, in which 250,000 people gathered in front of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington. In this photograph there is a crowd of men and women standing in what may be a street holding up signs that say “Voting rights now!” and “… equal men under god…” etc. This image is so significant because it photographs a moment in time that helped create a new national understanding of the problems of racial and economic injustice. By photographing this image at eye level, it makes the viewer see as if they were in the crowd being looked at which is captivating in itself. The signs being mostly cut off adds interest to the picture and the event taking place.
