From the Doing Democracy collection, I chose “WWII Cemetery”. This photo was taken by Arthur Rothstein in 1940. As the title suggests. It captures a vast cemetery of those who lost their lives in the Second World War. I feel the image being in black & white further emphasizes the heavy ominous feelings evoked when looking at a cemetery. The stark contrast in color between the grass and the sky in the horizon adds to that feeling as well. The amount of graves stretching beyond the horizon seems to be never ending, telling the story of the countless deaths of WW2.
