Street Photography

LaSalle at Amsterdam, New York
Todd Webb
1945

I chose this picture because it perfectly depicts the beauty and power of street photography. This photograph reminds me to slow down and look around, so much is happening in life. With one seemingly simple and normal scene, there are a million stories occurring at once. I see not just two men, but two men who go to work everyday, possibly to provide for their families or maybe they own the produce stand? maybe they are immigrants who have come to New York for the chance of a better life? or maybe they have lived in New York for 30 years. Street photography reminds us of the humanity we all share, a reminder more pertinent now than ever.

The two workers are standing in the middle of bushels overflowing with produce. The repetition of the vegetables and bushels create a sense of chaos, but also order. The men look like they are ready to begin the work day.
