The photo I chose from the LUAG collection is titled “Memorial Lights 9.11.07” and was taken by Donna Ferrato. I am particularly drawn to this photograph because of its creativity. At first, I did not recognize what the photo was. However, as I analyzed it further I saw that it is the beam at the 911 memorial. This made me, as well as many others I am sure, enjoy the work so much more because it is meaningful and emotional. I personally chose this photo because of how recently the anniversary of 9/11 was. I can see the beam from my house, which is very far away, but it was interesting for me to see it from this close up angle as well. As I look at the photo more I see that there are two buildings surrounding the beam and a “one way” sign. I also notice the contrast between the dark and light parts of the photo, specifically the dark sky and the light beam. This contrast, as well as the photo being in black and white, allows the audience to focus on the beam much more as it stands out clearly from its background. This is important because Ferrato wants the viewers to think of the beam as the focus of the photo which also draws her audience to the importance of 9/11. Furthermore, having the buildings placed on either side of the beam draws the reader to the space between them, where the beam lies. Lastly, there are a few examples of symbolism that I noticed. The line the beam radiates could symbolize strength, something that many people need when thinking about this tragedy. Also, I thought that the “one way” sign could represent the fact that America has been moving in a positive direction in terms of the acceptance and mourning of 9/11 since 2001.
