Blog Post #8: Street Photograph

What is this post? Choose a street photograph from the LUAG collection in Maginnes Hall that is particularly strong. Write a description of the photograph and an analysis of the composition. Why did you choose this piece?

Mario Finocchiaro, Italian, 1920s – 1999. Elderly Crowd, Austria. c.1960. Artstor, library.artstor.org/asset/28143081

Photographed in Mario Finocchiaro, Eldery Crowd, Austria is exactly what the title infers, a crowd of elderly people. There are 4 main faces clearly represented in the photograph that all express great emotion. One can tell from the clothing worn by the subjects that this image was taken in the 1900s. All of the subjects seem to be looking at something in the distance that evokes emotion out of all of them. This is a main reason why I chose this piece to analyze. When a photograph/ piece of artwork has subjects that express strong emotion I find the pieces extremely intriguing. Emotions are fun to interpret, especially because all the subjects may be looking at the same thing but no two faces will ever look exactly alike. The man to the far right of the image looks happily curious, while the women to his left looks blankly confused. The women pictured lowest in the image has a dramatic expression on her face that embodies a great deal of worry. Lastly the man to the far left looks up at whatever the subject may be looking at in deep confused and thought, he looks as though he may ask a question or is trying to figure something out in his head. None of the subjects look scared or terrified, and their casual and comfortable body language promote the idea that they are gazing at something interesting but positive, nothing that would cause any harm. This piece also drew my attention due to the fact that not all people in the background seem to be looking at whatever the main subjects are looking at. This provokes the thought in my head that the subjects may just be looking at something as simple as some construction as they wait for a bus to arrive.
