The composition of this photograph is striking because of the people and their surroundings. Although there are a few complex residential buildings, there are no roads or cars surrounding them. Instead, there are people, mostly women walking everywhere. The main focus of the composition is the women walking in a straight line and the very large billboard of two men who are overlooking the people. No one appears to be happy. They just appear to be going somewhere. If the photograph didn’t show the dirt roads and billboards, but rather just focused on the women walking, I don’t think we as viewers would sense the same emotions of disparity. We can see these people are living lives that do not seem enthralling whatsoever because of their environment. This composition of showing a lot of the neighborhood gives us context of the women’s lives. The article describes the neighborhood as having no infrastructure, and the billboard as saying that all the people will continue on in the same path for the future. Even without knowing this from the article, we can tell this from the composition.
