Cristobal Herrera-Ulanshkevich uses his camera to freeze an interesting moment in time. While the surfer and his waves (which are the most in focus) are closer to the foreground and are crisply captured, the waves and movement of the water further in the distance become more blurry.
Off in the distance, the skyline is clouded by the mist of the waves, which helps keep full focus on the surfer and his wake. The contrast of the whites from the surf and the dark waves make the photograph more dynamic. The movement line created by the top of the wave is smooth and present for the whole picture. The panoramic view captures the true form of the wave and helps place the viewer fully into the scene. Shadows created by the clouds also work to create a more comprehensive tonal range throughout the picture, while still keeping an emphasis on the surfer and ocean.
