The photograph above was taken by Edward Quigley. It is titled “Landscape With Running Spring Water”. It was taken between 1951 and 1953.
As I first analyze this photo I notice a body of water splashing up against a line of rocks. The rougher water is to the left of the photo and then there is calmer water to the right. When I look into the composition of this photograph the first element that catches my eye is the contrast between light and dark. This contrast really accentuates the water that is crashing into the rocks because it is much lighter than the darker water it is next to. The water also seems to be moving, this adds more detail to the composition. Furthermore, there is some motion blur which suggests that this water continuously moves. This motion grabs the viewers eye as it takes up a large part of the foreground. I also noticed that the viewer can follow the clear line that runs down the photo, that the rocks create, all the way to the back of the photo. This line of rocks is a very interesting part of the composition in my opinion because it gives the photo more depth and allows for a difference between the two different motions in the water, one smoother and one more chaotic.
