Ghana – Fuveme – A villager carries the roof of his house on his shoulder as the high tide has started and the waves are quickly entering the village and destroying houses on its way.

Italian photographer, Matilde Gattoni covers social, environmental, and human rights issues around the world since 2002 when she began her career. Gattoni uses photography to highlight the impact of climate change on communities across Asia, Africa, and the Middle East. A recent series of photographs shows the consequences of coastal erosion in West Africa, where homes, schools, and livelihoods have been destroyed by the high tide precipitated by global warming. From this image, the viewer can clearly see the coast destroyed by some sort of natural cause as well as the man carrying the roof of a building. Both of these aspects help to effectively communicate the environmental issues she advocates for.
