The Motion of Water

Photo 1

This photo was taken by Patricia Martin BriceƱo a Mexican photographer in 1972. It captures a girl on the bottom of a pool holding a small orca whale floaty that because of the murky quality of the photo upon first glance looks real. This gives an almost mystical quality to the photo as well as her eyes being heavily shadowed and solid looking stance that she is in. Instead of discussing the motion I find that it is the absence of motion in this photograph that makes it as alluring as it is since we know that she is underwater it couldn’t have lasted very long but is frozen in time. Although there is a cloud of lightness around her that was probably caused by movement it looks more like a spotlight than anything clear enough to indicate her swimming down. The photo is mostly monochromatic with blue tones ranging from almost black to a close white.
