The similar concern I chose to look into was homelessness. I came across an artist by the name, Pedro Oliveira who started a series back in June 2015 to raise awareness to the social issue of homelessness. One of the beauties of this series that drew my attention was the variety in photographs. Usually when a subject is considered heavy and sad the facial expressions of the subjects tend to match that. Not in Oliveira’s series. The people documented are shown making a variety of faces that express numerous positive and negative expressions. This attribute of the series is what makes the work effective in communicating its message. Oliveira’s contradicts stereotypes of homeless people, showing their happiness and uplifting attitudes. This display of what many would describe as an uncommon idea of what homeless people would display encourages others to help.
