Blog Post 5: Activism Photography

“Milli, 35, South Africa. In April 2010 Milli went to stay with a friend. The landlord strangled her with a wire. He shouted, “You think you are a man! I’m going to make you pregnant and I’m going to kill you.” He then raped her for hours. He was arrested, but he was released on $40 bail and didn’t appear in court. He was eventually tracked down a year later.” (National Geographic)

Robin Hammond is a photographer out of New Zealand who has spent his career tackling issues of human rights. More recently, he has been created a project called, “Where Love is Illegal.” This project aims to bring to light the atrocities endured by the LGBTQI community in a few African countries. He takes portraits of couples or individuals who have endured some form of abuse just because of their sexual orientation. He also includes a small description of what happened and who the victims are. The pairing of his message of what happened and photography skills combine into a powerful and meaningful message.
