James Rodriguez: Guatemala: Life After Genocide (2006)

This photo was taken in Xecoyeu, Chapel, many years after the Guatemala civil war (1960-1996) which left over 250,000 civilian victims. Thanks to exhumations and DNA analysis, the war victims are finally being identified and properly buried.  This image, captured in 2006, depicts a group of people preparing for a ceremony to bury their loved ones from the war.

The placement and position of the camera allow the viewer to completely take in the entirety of the ceremony from the groups of people coming from the background to the heard of people directly in front of the camera.  The L shape of people dressed in red on their way to the larger crowd is really capturing and brings the viewers eyes from the background to the foreground of the image really well.  These aspects of the composition contribute to enhancing the content of the photograph.
