The photograph above is titled “Trailer Camp Children” and is by Ansel Easton Adams (ca. 1940; Printed 1974). The photograph was taken in Richmond, Virginia. As I analyze this photo I am first drawn to the contrast between black and white. The dark pieces of this photo really accentuate the lighter parts. The hair of the children along with some of their clothing becomes bold and dark allowing the light parts nearby to strongly stand out. The lighting also contributes to the composition of this photo by highlighting not only the faces, but the key features of the children’s faces that overall help put together an easily viewable facial expression. The contrast between light and dark and the lighting placement of this photo allows the audience to feel the solemn mood of the photograph and to focus on the appearance of the children.

You can also talk more about the expressions on their faces and about light direction. Good observation of light contrast.
