Composition & Lighting

Trailer Camp Children, Richmond, Californiaca. 1940, printed 1974
Ansel Easton Adams American

Adams’ use of lighting effectively enhances the drama of his photograph, Trailer Camp Children. Each child’s face is illuminated, allowing the viewer to easily see their emotions and expression. The innocence of the baby holds the gaze of the viewer and is the brightest of the three children. The shadows surrounding the oldest boy’s face convey a sense of pressure and anxiety. By composing the picture with no parents and a dimly lit background, there is an overwhelming sense of fear in the picture. Perhaps the oldest boy is worried about how he will provide for his younger siblings? when will they have their next meal? or for how much longer can they survive?
