As an artist who has studied figure I really appreciate the use of the figure in abstract compositions such as this photo by Weston. Although this is pretty clearly a close up of someone’s knees folded up under them the detail of fabric underneath them and the shadows created elevate the photograph as an abstract shot. Flesh has natural contours and looks soft which is emphasized by the faded quality of the photo and the curved lines from the thigh and calf pressed together. The close crop keeps the composition interesting with tight negative space that is utilized effectively to give the subject space. The layering of the two legs could also be compared to mountains or other formations that happen in nature.
