Diane Arbus’ photograph of two New Yorkers is a good example of a short depth of field. The use of depth of field elevates this picture by bringing all attention and focus to the woman and man, holding their hotdogs. Without a shallow depth the viewer would not be drawn to every detail of the couple like the woman’s bracelets or the man’s patches. The blurred background against the clear foreground makes the image visually pleasing. The direction that the picture was taken at, the diagonal walkway and the trees in the background, also contributes to this.

Good observation of details and compositional lines.
