Depth of Field

The image above was taken by Paul Strand in 1933. The image is called A Man with a Hoe, Los Remedios. This picture shows a. man taking a break from farming with his tools in his lap. Strand puts emphasis on the subject, the man, by shooting with the intent of having a shallower depth of field – most likely by shooting with a lower aperture. It looks like the slabs of stone the man is sitting on a rather textured. If this picture were taken with a deeper depth the texture of the stone would drown out the textures of the dirt on the mans clothes and skin.

This image above was taken by SebastiĆ£o SALGADO when he spent 8 years capturing images from parts of the world that were “untainted by modern life”. This picture is of the nomadic Nenets of Northern Siberia. Salgado does an exceptional job capturing all the details in this image. The further depth of field used in this image allows the viewer to feel as if they were there. The use of deeper depth of field exaggerates the emptiness and vastness of the Nenets’ tundra and grands the viewer more of a feel for what the Nenets’ day to day life must be like.
