by Diane Arbus

In both, analyze the strengths of the composition and describe how the artist’s choice for depth of field contributes to the composition.

The first image Veteran with a flag, N.Y.C. 1971 by Diane Arbus is an image with a short depth of field. The focus of this image is on the whole body of the veteran. The strength of this composition is that the audience could only pay attention to the veteran without distracting by other content in the image while other parts of this image are blurry. The short depth of field corresponds to the title of this image by only focusing on the veteran.

The Second image Girl in a coat lying on her bed, N.Y.C. 1968 by Diane Arbus is an image with a long depth of field. In this image, we can see the girl, her bed and all other parts of her bedroom that captured in it clearly. The long depth of field keeps the image sharp the artist used it to record the interesting background that she wanted to include in this image instead of only focusing on the girl, but the whole bedroom. According to the title, the subject matters of this image are the girl and her bed.
