AARON SISKIND (#4): Martha’s Vineyard, 1954
In this photo Arron Siskin uses texture as one of his main compositional elements. The image is very sharp, you can clearly tell that you are looking at some kind of rock formation. It is like you can actually feel the rocks in the picture. The texture is very rough. The picture makes great use of negative space, the rocks are the only thing that are present and since the background is just white the viewers eyes are directed towards the rocks. It also uses the rule of thirds. What I would call the main rock is located in the left most third rather than being directly in the center. The rock on the bottom also takes up the entire bottom third.
Well done – great observations on composition, texture and negative space.
