The photo above is titled, “Volcano 114” and was taken by Aaron Siskind in 1980. Siskind captured this rare moment within the last 10 years of his life. The picture shows a cooled lava with a wrinkly and somewhat leathery texture. Without the title of the piece for context, it is hard to identify exactly what you are seeing. The moment captured is rare in the sense that not many people get to see lava in person within their lifetime. Siskind captures this part of earth’s many natural phenomena in a focused black and white picture. I think this picture is a form of abstract expressionism, taken through the eyes and lens of a man who spent many years taking documentary photos.
