Peru 229 was shot by Aaron Siskind in 1977. The photograph closely follows Siskind’s style, which tends to emphasize one piece of a larger scene. The graphic qualities of the black box/shape take up the majority of the frame and appear to make the photograph flatter. The marks and texture in the background provide some light texture and subtle context…whether this is a photograph of a cave painting, the side of the building, or some other subject. Without giving too much away, Siskind allows the viewer to interpret freely and let their experiences guide how they see the photograph. Siskind’s interest in abstract expressionism are at the heart of this photograph and how he chose to capture the moment.

I agree that this shot is similar to the one in the article that referred to Siskind’s interest in the Abstract Expressionists, especially Franz Kline.
