Imogen Cunningham was best known for her botanical photography. She mixed soft-focus prints with portraiture and pictorialism. In this image she takes a close-up photo of a magnolia. This was part of a two-year study she did on the flower. I was drawn to this photograph because of the natural form of the flower. I found the almost abstraction of the flower, due to being so close to the object when photographing, interesting. At first when I see the image it appears to clearly be a magnolia, but as I look longer she natural form starts to let my mind wander as to what other objects could be captured in the image. Such as a pineapple in the center (the center of the flower). This image is relevant today because macro photography is very present in contemporary work. This unique may have been an influence to photographers interested in macro photography.
