Female Police Officer, Leonard Freed, 1979

This photograph by Leonard Freed is extremely powerful. The 1970’s were a time of push for women’s rights in the United States. In the photo, the main subject is a woman in a New York Police Department uniform. This was an extremely rare sighting making this photograph that much more powerful. New York City is one of the most impactful cities in the United States, so for her to be wearing this uniform, tells the viewers that this was a time of change for women and their rights. The way in which Leonard Freed captured this moment and cropped out all the other people surrounding her tells us that he wanted her to be the main focus.
