Artist: Ken Heyman Title: Men Checking Out Mannequins on the Street, New York City, NY Date: 1973
In this black in white image three men are depicted on a New York City Street. To the right of the men are two mannequins for women’s clothing sitting outside of a clothing store. The men are seen pointing, smiling, and looking toward the mannequins that are not clothed. This is a composition that points out the objectification of women’s bodies. An interesting element of this image is the fact that the mannequins are sitting taller than the men in the frame and appear larger. This hierarchy in the composition helps the viewer understand that although the men are the living subjects in the image the female mannequins are the main subject in the composition.
