Composition and Lighting Analysis

This picture by Ansel Adams is a black and white, vertical rectangle format photograph. Adams is using rule of third composition: the main focus, three kids, occupies two thirds of the frame, with mostly backgrounds and the negative space filling the rest of the picture. The kids are looking at different directions. The small child in the bottom is staring straight into the lens, expressing his curiosity and innocence, while the two older kids starting into the empty space at the right, their looks are giving the viewer a sense of uncertainty and melancholy. The majority of the light is casted on the faces, creating a strong contrast between the foreground and background, further emphasizing on the subject. The light source comes from the left of the frame, the same direction the two older kids are looking at, adding a sense of mystery and hope.
