Harry Callahan – Erica F

Harry Callahan, Eleanor, 1951

This photo by Harry Callahan has a long depth of field that is quite perplexing still, even with everything in focus. We can see lots of branches surrounding the center of the image which is a window with the figure of a woman. This image is extremely strong when it comes to the lighting and the contrast. The backlit nature of the window creates high contrast with the figure and the branches, and without the window, the woman would be lost. The composition is centered, which often isn’t very interesting, but with so little information that this image presents the viewer with, it is absolutely interesting. How is there a window in the middle of all these branches? What are these branches? Where is this? These questions are all unanswerable by looking at the image.
